Ronnie Hints in Booster Gold #1

As those of you who picked up Booster Gold #1 last week know, there were some references to the Ronnie Raymond version of Firestorm in the story. I’m going to list those now, so beware of spoilers if you plan to read the issue yourself (and you should!).

  • As Booster travels in Rip Hunter’s timesphere, Rip explains that recent events caused wormholes in the time stream, creating anomalies. As they talk, we see a number of scenes in the background including one very prominent image of the Ronnie/Martin Firestorm.
  • In Rip Hunter’s Time Lab, there is a chalkboard that contains Rip’s disjointed notes. The most prominent note says “RONNIE RAYMOND+X = FIRESTORM!” This one really got some attention.
  • On the final page of the issue, we see some scenes that “will happen” in future issues, according to Geoff Johns. The second one is marked as “Week 104, Day 1″. That’s 52 weeks after the conclusion of 52, which also means the end of Countdown and the start of the 2008 event Final Crisis. For the most part, this is an assembly of heroes from the Giffen Justice League, with other heroes like Aquaman being present in his old 80’s blue patterned outfit. Most curious, though, is Firestorm’s outfit. It a combination of Ronnie’s and Jason’s. The electron trails wrap all the way around the costume as they did on Ronnie, but the electrons themselves are white as they are on Jason’s costume. The “proton” is the middle is white, like Jason’s, but has a corona like Ronnie’s. The pants have no yellow in them, which is more like Jason’s and less like Ronnie’s. But the shoulders are closer to Ronnie’s style.

I’ll also mention this one for the sake of completeness, but I think it’s something else.

  • Booster is out with Skeets looking through future newspapers to identify chances to play hero. One of the headlines says “Booster Gold Stops Nuclear Metahuman Explosion”. Below that headline is the partially obscured line “es School Chi”, which I take to mean “Saves School Children”. I’ve heard the theory that this line might possibly pertain to Ronnie Raymond’s “metahuman explosion” but personally I think it’s a humorous nod to Marvel’s Civil War, which was kicked off by a metahuman explosion killing schoolchildren.

So, as you can see, there’s a lot more substance here to consider than the fanboyish wishful thinking we’ve been hearing for a while. But what does it all mean?

Again, it’s not possible that they are meaningless teases due to that last page being a confirmed future event. At a minimum, I’d say, we’re in for an appearance of a Firestorm that includes Ronnie Raymond. It could be a team gathered on another world. It could mean that this team and possibly others like it are drawn from other worlds to fight some great evil on New Earth. What’s the likelihood, though, that it signals the reintroduction of Ronnie Raymond in DC’s main continuity?

I think the odds are good, actually, given the amount of attention drawn to the character by Rip’s board. It seems unlikely that they would give the matter such prominence otherwise. But who is the X in RONNIE + X? Jason is the mostly likely candidate. Consider the statements about putting Jason on a team. Consider his status as a Dan Didio creation and an ethnic hero. Consider the new stories that could be told.

Personally, I would enjoy a Ronnie/Jason Firestorm, as hinted at by the costume seen on the last page. To be honest, I really like Martin Stein but I’m not sure that his character has clicked since his return. He was either too angsty, silent or so upbeat that his confidence removed the tension from scenes in which Firestorm was in danger. I like him as a mentor, but perhaps it’s time for him to step outside of the costume itself. Let’s add that to my list of predictions.

I could be completely wrong - it has certainly happened before. Still, I find the prospect intriguing. I think there could be some great stories there, and it’s certainly not a foolish move from a purely commercial perspective. Ultimately, I’d be happy with either a limited appearance or a new Jason/Ronnie status quo. Let’s see what happens.

The Firestorm news started rolling in yesterday with the announcement of not one but two new Mattel actions figures, featuring both Ronnie and Jason. Pictures and further information here. Look for them next year. I’m all over that - I actually kind of like the atomy hands.

The bigger hint of things to come was from Dan Didio during today’s New Worlds Order panel. It came in the form of one of his famous “slips”. Here’s how Newsarama reports the exchange during Q&A:

Will we see Firestorm going after Darkseid? “Yes,” Didio said, saying to read Countdown and Justice League of America. After Wayne gave him a dirty look, Didio said, “Did I give something away?”
Wayne: “Yes.”

That all but confirms the identity of Firestorm’s future team. I’ve said for a long time that that’s the right move for the character, so I’m excited to see further confirmation!

On the creator front, Newsarama also posted a new interview with Jamal. It doesn’t touch on Firestorm, but it’s a great way to learn what he’s up to. I like seeing his take on the new Blue Beetle. The big news for one Firestorm alumni, Keith Champagne, is that he’ll be writing the upcoming Countdown: Arena miniseries. Details here. It’s a high-profile knock-down, drag-out among various versions among some of DC’s biggest names.

Cliffhanger to Be Resolved in Countdown

The ever-vigilant KoolJ pointed out that there indeed was some Firestorm news from San Diego. It wasn’t exciting enough, it seems, for the two sites whose coverage I read to record it, but Wizard picked up this exchange between a fan and Paul Dini:

Q: “Will we find out what happens to Firestorm now that Darkseid has kidnapped Martin Stein?
A: “You’ll see Firestorm and the resolution to that story in Countdown.”

I can’t complain about that! My interest in Countdown is sagging, but I’ll certainly be around to see how this one plays out.

Silence from San Diego

I thought we might hear more about the future of Firestorm at San Diego Comicon, but I saw nothing in any of the panel reports. Over on the DC boards, I’ve seen rumors coming from the convention ranging from “cliffhanger from #35 soon to be resolved in Countdown” to “Firestorm killed off in next event”. Either is possible (although I don’t buy that a DCer would just spill the information if the death rumor is true), but I’d like to hear more about the sources of those rumors before buying into them.

I’ve been out of town all week, but now I’m back to converting content. Notice the Page section to the right? The Issues page is alive and well and converted into the new format. I’ve moved to listing minor appearances in their own section so, once again, I’ll need your help to keep an eye out of those.
