Poor Stein Can’t Catch a Break

In a brief couple of pages of this week’s Countdown #12, we see that Martin has gone from being Desaad’s captive to an OMAC. Some days it’s just not easy being an Nobel-winning physicist, is it?

Outside of that new issue, I’ve updated the issues page to cover the recent JLoA, Green Lantern and Countdown appearances. Many thanks to those of you who keep me honest and let me know about those appearances. Keep’em coming!

On the merchandise front, Mattel announced that it’s changing its Firestorm action figure plans a little, so that the Ronnie/Jason mix will be 50/50. Look for those in a few months.

Finally, if you enjoy watching people like me trying to out-nerd everyone, there’s an interesting discussion on the DC boards about Jason’s age. My vote: he’s 19, maybe 20. All of this helps motivate me to make that comprehensive Jason bio I’ve been kicking around in my head.

Firestorm Makes a Showing in Countdown #25

I bailed on Countdown a few weeks ago, but they found a way to reel me in again. Firestorm will have a significant part in this week’s #25, as seen in this preview. He’s even on the cover, even if it’s not my favorite image of him. Don’t miss it!

Speaking of appearances, I’ve been working on the issues page which is now relatively complete. There’s a new section for post-series appearances, which so far includes a grand total of two issues. Some recent cameos and mentions have been added to the cameos section, too. Thanks to those of you who pointed out appearances that I was missing!

Baltimore DC Nation Panel: Firestorm in JLA

Just in case anyone needed more confirmation, today’s panel report spelled out the fact that Firestorm was joining the team:
“DiDio confirmed that Dwayne McDuffie will be bringing Firestorm to Justice League of America.”

Again, I think that’s the right move for the character. I can’t wait to see what Dwayne does with him. Thanks to Phantomblot on the DC boards for the heads up!

Notice the new curtains and paint job? Since the news has been slow I made some updates last night. I’m no designer and it’s simple, but I think it works.

Silence from San Diego

I thought we might hear more about the future of Firestorm at San Diego Comicon, but I saw nothing in any of the panel reports. Over on the DC boards, I’ve seen rumors coming from the convention ranging from “cliffhanger from #35 soon to be resolved in Countdown” to “Firestorm killed off in next event”. Either is possible (although I don’t buy that a DCer would just spill the information if the death rumor is true), but I’d like to hear more about the sources of those rumors before buying into them.

I’ve been out of town all week, but now I’m back to converting content. Notice the Page section to the right? The Issues page is alive and well and converted into the new format. I’ve moved to listing minor appearances in their own section so, once again, I’ll need your help to keep an eye out of those.

Notice Anything New?

In a long-overdue move, I’m moving the news portion of this site into a blog. Yes, you can take that as a sign that I’m not out of the Firestorm news business. With this change, you’ll be able to subscribe to my RSS feed, you won’t have to scroll down 50 pages to find old news, and I can update a little more quickly. All good news for you and I. If I’m feeling really brave, I might even try enabling comments.

Next up: making this look like the rest of the site, linking to the reference content, and importing all of the old news. This could get bloody, but I’ll get there. I hope.

Series Finale this Week

Three years later, the final issue of Firestorm volume 3 is out this Wednesday. We’re promised a new status quo and Dwayne’s writing has been great so far, so I’m very much looking forward to it. Don’t miss it!.

And how about that World War 3? Yeah, some of the story framework doesn’t make a ton of sense, Jason isn’t going to kiss Lorraine and, hey, weren’t there people on that carrier? But, all that aside, I found it to be an immensely enjoyable mini-series. Hats of to Keith and John, both of whom have a history with Firestorm. Keith, in particular, did some impressive writing for someone newer to the scripting side of things. His two issue were full of little moments that really sold the story.

On a housekeeping note, I finally updated the Issues page so, while I might be missing a small number of very minor references, I’m basically caught up there. I want to serve as a resource for writers who want to pull Firestorm off the shelf, dust him off and stick him in their books. I have a fair amount of character biography updates to do, as well.

Part Two of the Final Act Tomorrow

Firestorm #34 is out tomorrow and I can’t wait to see it. As the middle part of a three arc story, I don’t expect quite as much movement as we saw in the previous issue, but I have no doubt it will be a good one. Remember, Pop Mhan will be taking over art duties so don’t be too shocked by an abrupt change in look. While you’re at it, Dwayne also has issues of Action Comics and Fantastic Four coming out tomorrow. Not too shabby!

I wish there was more to report. The usual knuckleheads are doing their best to embarrass themselves on the DC message boards and make the place unpleasant for everyone else. There’s no specific news to report about future appearances so we’ll wait another three weeks for World War III part 1 to see what Keith has in store for Jason. I haven’t even seen any tempting original Firestorm art auctions lately, except one from Perez’s Flash backups that went for a few hundred. I will get some pages updated, I promise. It’s just that I upgraded to Vista (I like it) and now I can’t find the install CD for my art program. D’oh!

My store wound up ordering something like sixteen of the Firestorm: Reborn TPBs mistakenly thinking that it was a regular issue. Oops! They’re confident that they can move them eventually, though. Hopefully Stuart and Jamal got a little extra cut because of that. :)
