Firestorm Galore!

For a guy without a title, Firestorm sure is getting some nice face time lately!

Countdown, Booster Gold and Suicide Squad spoilers ahoy.

First, there have been the recent, weekly appearances in Countdown which has taken a turn for the better. If I could take just a moment to be whiney, I’d mention that we seem to have lost track of Stein and Gehenna hasn’t been referenced in ages even though she’s presumably right there inside Firestorm. Last week’s penciller used the old costume last week and the colorist got some details wrong this week. The writers are probably unaware of the kind of healing voodoo that Jason has done in the past, which would make short work of the virus Val is carrying around. Still, those are mostly nits. It’s fun to see some weekly appearances.

On top of that, we have Jason/Firestorm OMAC’ed to death in an alternative timeline in today’s Booster Gold #7. Now that Geoff is departing the title this summer, I wonder if his Ronnie plans - assuming there were any - are going to have to sit and wait for another time.

Finally, it looks like it’s curtains for dear old Cliff Carmichael. Faraday shot him twice in the chest and once in the head with high caliber handgun in today’s Suicide Squad #7. That could be the end of one of Firestorm’s oldest support cast members/enemies. I was bummed. All is forgiven, though, since the miniseries is a great read.

I’ve been keeping an eye out for more Firestorm news from the various conventions, but either I’ve missed it or there hasn’t been much. As always, help keep an ear out!

Poor Stein Can’t Catch a Break

In a brief couple of pages of this week’s Countdown #12, we see that Martin has gone from being Desaad’s captive to an OMAC. Some days it’s just not easy being an Nobel-winning physicist, is it?

Outside of that new issue, I’ve updated the issues page to cover the recent JLoA, Green Lantern and Countdown appearances. Many thanks to those of you who keep me honest and let me know about those appearances. Keep’em coming!

On the merchandise front, Mattel announced that it’s changing its Firestorm action figure plans a little, so that the Ronnie/Jason mix will be 50/50. Look for those in a few months.

Finally, if you enjoy watching people like me trying to out-nerd everyone, there’s an interesting discussion on the DC boards about Jason’s age. My vote: he’s 19, maybe 20. All of this helps motivate me to make that comprehensive Jason bio I’ve been kicking around in my head.

Welcome Aboard, Kid!

JLoA #15 Spoilers Ahoy!

Well, it’s been discussed, hinted, teased since Jason appeared on the scene, but today it’s finally official - he’s a Leaguer!  Gehenna might technically be, too, but what do I know?  I’m excited.  I’ve long thought that this was the right move.  Jason now has a book to call home and is in the hands of a writer with obvious affection for the character.

And that’s two you owe him now, Big Blue!

Today also brought a bit of clarification in the form of Countdown to Final Crisis #21, where we see that Stein isn’t MIA.  He’s back and recovering from being kidnapped, which isn’t exactly new territory for him lately.  It will be interesting to see what role he will take going forward.

Don’t Miss Justice League #15 Tomorrow

So the conclusion to Firestorm’s Countdown arc was a bit of a head-scratcher, but if the Newsarama preview is any indication, Firestorm has a nice role to play in the final issue of Dwayne McDuffie’s first story arc.  At this point, don’t look at it if you haven’t already.  Ed Benes certainly does the character justice.

Now we’re in the unusual position of not knowing where he’ll show up next.  Membership offer?  Let’s hope so. I do know that he at least makes a cameo in future issues of Countdown.

As an update to Jamal’s new art rep, they’ve now posted quite a bit of original art for sale. Make sure Santa knows.

And where is Jason? Did anyone else catch themselves asking those questions on the last page of Countdown #25? Interesting choices by the penciller and colorist there, but I realized that it was Jason by process of elimination.

SPOILERS AHOY!

It’s great that we’re back on track to resolving the cliffhanger from the end of the series. Desaad pulled a Luis Salvador (see Firestorm #7) and took control of the matrix with Jason and Gehenna inside. Martin is found. It’ll be interesting to see where it’s heading, and we only have to wait one week to see the next chapter!

Did You Catch the Superman Prime Special?

Today’s issue had a nice little Firestorm bit in it thanks to Geoff Johns and Pete Woods. It was just a few panels but a fun appearance nonetheless. Great comic overall, though, so pick it up if you haven’t already! Yet more catching up to do on the issues page - I’ll get there!

In former creator news, Jamal Igle recently let everyone know that he’s updated his site and found a new art rep. His issue of Teen Titans came out today and it really looks great. Best of all, he’s going to be a Papa come spring. Congratulations to Jamal and Karine! Being a Dad is one of the best things you can get out of life.

JLA Wedding Special: Required Reading for Firestorm Fans

Today’s Justice League of America Wedding Special was really the kickoff to Dwayne McDuffie’s JLA run. Not in my wildest dreams did I imagine that Firestorm would be featured so prominently in it. It’s almost as if Firestorm #36 were dropped into the middle of the issue, but it also works very well in the larger story.

I won’t spoil it with plot details (I’ll add a summary to the Issues page in a few days) but there are a good dozen pages dedicated to a run-in that Firestorm (Jason/Gehenna version) has with some baddies. Perhaps even more interesting is the surprising outcome. Nicely done, Dwayne.

Also, for the record, Mike McKone draws an incredible Firestorm.

Get Your Firestorm Tomorrow

No, unfortunately, I’m not referring to another issue of the comic - they put that to bed nicely with Dwayne’s #35. Still, tomorrow is the day that the Jason Rusch Firestorm action figure hits store shelves. I do think they made the colors a bit too bright, but that’s certainly not going to stop me from picking it up. I’m excited! I need to clear a spot on my desk…

Speaking of the series finale, that was quite a cliffhanger. I’m not sure I’ve seen a series end that way, but it gives me great hope that the story will continue. Yesterday’s August solicitations don’t offer much hope of seeing that thread being picked up this summer, but you never know.

Stuart Moore gave a nice interview to Comixfan containing some nice post mortem analysis of what went right and what went wrong with the series. It’s also a good way to catch up on Stuart’s more recent projects.

Series Finale this Week

Three years later, the final issue of Firestorm volume 3 is out this Wednesday. We’re promised a new status quo and Dwayne’s writing has been great so far, so I’m very much looking forward to it. Don’t miss it!.

And how about that World War 3? Yeah, some of the story framework doesn’t make a ton of sense, Jason isn’t going to kiss Lorraine and, hey, weren’t there people on that carrier? But, all that aside, I found it to be an immensely enjoyable mini-series. Hats of to Keith and John, both of whom have a history with Firestorm. Keith, in particular, did some impressive writing for someone newer to the scripting side of things. His two issue were full of little moments that really sold the story.

On a housekeeping note, I finally updated the Issues page so, while I might be missing a small number of very minor references, I’m basically caught up there. I want to serve as a resource for writers who want to pull Firestorm off the shelf, dust him off and stick him in their books. I have a fair amount of character biography updates to do, as well.

Don’t Miss World War III

Just a reminder that World War III starts tomorrow with Black Adam taking on the world. As I’m sure you know, Firestorm is going to be swept up in the mess. He will have a prominent role in the first WWIII issue named “A Call to Arms”, as noted by the cover. I’m really looking forward to seeing what Keith Champagne has to say about the character and where the whole thing is going.

There’s not much else to report in the realm of Firestorm news. I imagine we’ll be seeing Jason and company in Countdown and there are some hints that Firestorm might have a role to play in the new Infinity Inc. Of course, we’re also just a week away from the series finale and a promised change to the character. I’m interested to see what happens there, but I can’t even begin to speculate on what it might mean.
